Diet, Physical Activity, & Cancer: What Health Professionals Need to Know about Current Evidence and How to Translate It in Realistic Lifestyle Choices

Thursday, June 2, 12p-1p CST

About the Webinar:

The problem with talking about cancer risk and cancer survival isn’t lack of information. It’s that today people are surrounded by often-conflicting information. People rely on healthcare and public health professionals to help them make sense of what they hear from media and marketers, friends and family. But it’s easy for professionals to feel overwhelmed by information overload, too. This webinar will help healthcare and public health professionals find an easier – and better – way to provide the evidence-based answers and guidance people need… without scrambling to read up on every single study. We’ll look at how the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has developed recommendations on diet and physical activity choices based on what is recognized as the gold-standard synthesis and interpretation of the best of accumulated scientific research on this topic.

We’ll review what the recommendations mean for reducing cancer risk and for cancer survivorship. What are the key themes and messages for the people you serve? What are the practical tips for realistically putting them in practice? And what resources can you share to make it easier? It’s understandable for anyone to feel overwhelmed and confused about whether lifestyle makes a difference, and if it does, which choices matter. You’ll leave this webinar with a clear sense of what we know today and how you can share it with others.

 Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the progression in focus and evidence in research on diet,  physical activity and cancer in recent decades (as exemplified in major AICR systematic reviews and reports).
  2. Identify the current recommendations on diet and physical activity from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and describe the strength of evidence behind them.
  3. Using strategies discussed, develop talking points for conversations with people to accurately address common questions and misunderstandings about diet and physical activity to reduce cancer risk and support cancer survivorship.
