About the Webinar:

Cancer treatment, while life-saving, often brings significant financial burdens, a phenomenon known as financial toxicity. This panel will explore financial toxicity in cancer care, defining its core components, identifying contributing factors like medical costs and lost income, and illustrating its impact on patients and families. We will also discuss disparities and provide valuable resources to help mitigate financial burdens.

Learning Objectives:

1) Define financial toxicity and its causes in cancer care.

2) Illustrate the impact of financial toxicity on cancer patients and their families.

3) Discuss the disparities related to financial toxicity in cancer care.

4) Identify key resources and support services to help mitigate financial toxicity in cancer care.

About the Speakers

Alisa Seidler is a Senior Patient Financial Advocate at Nebraska Cancer Specialists. Her primary focus is to find ways to reduce the costs of cancer care and understand how these costs affect the patient experience. Alisa advocates for patients by incorporating their perspectives based on her extensive experience in healthcare practices. She is certified as an Oncology Navigator through the American Cancer Society's Leadership in Oncology Navigation (LION) program. Additionally, she is certified by the Nebraska Department of Insurance as a Medicare counselor with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which provides information and counseling to older Nebraskans and individuals with disabilities regarding Medicare, Medicaid, and health insurance.

Lisa Montanez is also a Patient Financial Advocate at Nebraska Cancer Specialists. With 20 years of experience in patient advocacy, Lisa specializes in assisting patients in rural areas, particularly those from low-income backgrounds or with varying levels of function. She helps navigate a wide range of government programs, including Medicaid and Social Security, as well as various other programs available through the Department of Health and Human Services. Like Alisa, Lisa is certified as an Oncology Navigator through the American Cancer Society's LION program and holds certification as a Medicare counselor through the Nebraska Department of Insurance's SHIP.

Together, Alisa and Lisa help patients overcome barriers to healthcare by identifying and addressing their social needs, such as housing, food, transportation, and financial stability, ultimately improving health outcomes.
